Sejak manusia mengenal peradaban, ribuan tahun yang lalu, manusia selalu berusaha untuk meningkatkan kualitas hidupnya. Peningkatan kualitas hidup tidak lain merupakan usaha untuk mendapatkan �kenyaman hidup�. Kenyamanan hidup yang dimaksudkan selain untuk dapat dinikmati oleh dirinya senndiri pada saat masih hidup, juga diharapkan dapat diberikan atau diwariskan kepada anak-cucu. Usaha untuk meningkatkan kualitas hidup manusia tidak akan berhenti sampai akhir zaman nanti. Usaha peningkatan kualitas hidup manusia sangat terasa sejak revolusi industry yang melanda benua Eropa pada pertengahan abad ke 19, kemudian menyebar ke Amerika. Padas sat itu manusia berlomba untuk menciptakan mesin-mesin baru untuk menghasilkan produk-produk baru yang diharapkan dapat segera dinikmati dalam waktu yang sesingkat-singkatnya (Wardhana, 2004).
