Laporan SPI (Statistik Perbankan Indonesia) selama periode 2001-2014 menunjukan ROTA (return on total asset) perbankan pada tataran Nasional masuk dalam peringkat 1 (karena berada di atas 1,5%). Nilai rata-rata ROTA selama periode tersebut sebesar 2,433% per tahun. Fluktuasi perkembangan ROTA selama periode tersebut menunjukan nilai minimal ROTA sebesar 1,43 % (tahun 2001); maksimum 3,23% (tahun 2004). Selama periode krisis keuangan global (2008-2011) terlihat ada penurunan nilai ROTA dari 2,51% (tahun 2007) menjadi 2,08% (tahun 2008), tahun 2009 meningkat mencapai 2,44%, dan pada tahun 2010 meningkat lagi mencapai 2,53%. Selama 2011-2014 nilai ROTA industri perbankan mencapai nilai 2,8% (tahun 2012) setelah itu menurun mencapai 2,79% di tahun 2014. Dinamika pertumbuhan ROTA perbankan tersebut berhubungan dengan pengendalian efisiensi pengelolaan beban operasional (BO) bank. Secara empirik ini terlihat dari penurunan nilai rasio BO/PO.
