Kata menggambar atau kegiatan menggambar dapat diartikan sebagai memindahkan satu atau beberapa objek ke atas bidang gambar tanpa melibatkan emosi, perasaan dan karakter penggambarnya. Pemindahan ini dalam pengertian pemindahan bentuk atau rupa dengan memperkecil atau memperbesar ukuran keseluruhan yang untuk kepentingan tertentu dapat juga mempergunakan skala perbandingan (perbandingan ukuran) secara akurat Gambar bentuk merupakan gambar yang meniru objek gambar nyata yang ada di alam atau buatan. Objek gambar bentuk sangat beragam, mulai dari benda yang dipakai sehari-hari, manusia, tumbuhan, hewan, ataupun alam pemandangan. Ukuran objekpun bermacam-macam, mulai dari yang ukuran besar seperti gajah, gunung, dan pemandangan alam, sampai yang berukuran kecil, seperti sel, tumbuhan, akar, dan kuman. Gambar bentuk dapat dibuat berwarna atau hitam putih.
