Description:
Pada umumnya masyarakat awam mengenal istilah nuklir dari sejarah Perang Dunia II. Pada saat itu, dua buah bom nuklir meledak atau diledakkan oleh tentara sekutu (Amerika Serikat) masing-masing di kota Hiroshima pada tanggal 6 Agustus 1945 dan Nagasaki pada tanggal 9 Agustus 1945 (PPIN Batan, 2008). Pada tahun 1953 Presiden AS Dwight D. Einshower menyampaikan pidato di depan Majelis Umum PBB, dikenal sebagai pidato �Atom for Peace�. Pidato tersebut mempromosikan penggunaan nuklir secara damai dan memastikan bahwa energi nuklir tidak digunakan untuk tujuan militer. Dalam pidato tersebut Einshower juga meminta agar terbentuknya organisasi internasional untuk menyebarluaskan penggunaan energi secara damai. Usulan tersebut mempelopori terbentuknya IAEA (International Atomotic Energy Agency) yang mempunyai tanggung jawab untuk promosi dan pengendalian teknologi nuklir (IALANA, 2012).
