Secara normatif pers dalam meliput suatu berita harus bersikap netral. Namun dalam prakteknya wartawan dalam tugas mencari dan meliput berita sulit melepaskan diri dari ikatan emosional dan primordialisme. Pada pemberitaan di surat kabar Kompas dan Republika mengenai konflik Ambon terlihat bahwa kedua surat kabar ini cukup sulit untuk bertindak objektif dan netral. Kepentingan-kepentingan ideologis dan agama sulit untuk dihindari dan mempengaruhi dalam pemuatan dan penyajian berita di surat kabar Kompas dan Republika
