Description:

Background: Low birth weight (LBW) is the highest predictor of infant mortality, especially in the first month of life. The care of the baby in an incubator leads to a separation between the mother and the newborn. This condition can cause a feeling of lack of confidence in the parents of babies in caring for their babies. An innovation made in the treatment of low birth weight babies is by bringing the baby closer to its mother, which is commonly called the kangaroo method of care (PMK). This study aims to identify the effect of education on the application of kangaroo care on the level of knowledge of the parents of LBW babies. Methods: This research design is preexperiment with the One Group Pre-Post Test Design approach, the number of samples in the study is 42 respondents with nonprobability sampling technique type quota sampling. Results: The results of this study indicate that the results of ρ-value = 0.000 ˂ α (0.05). It can be concluded that there is an effect of education on the application of kangaroo care on the level of knowledge of the parents of LBW babies at Puskesmas Palmerah, West Jakarta. Conclusion: Health education aims to provide and improve knowledge, attitudes, practices of both individuals, groups or communities in maintaining and improving their own health, so that the results of this study are proven to be in line with existing theories. In further research, it is hoped that it can analyze the effectiveness of the application of the kangaroo method on the health conditions of LBW babies.
