Pada saat ini persaingan sesama rumah sakit yang semakin besar baik antara rumah sakit didalam negeri, dengan rumah sakit dari negara tetangga, bahkan dengan rumah sakit di Indonesia tetapi modal asing, membuat kompetisi bertambah ketat.Strategi mempertahankan kelangsungan rumah sakit termasuk strategi dalam meningkatkan daya saing dengan inovasi-inovasi yang terbaik, sangat diperlukan. Menurut data Kementerian Kesehatan tahun 2009, jumlah rumah sakit di Indonesia ada 1.334 buah, terdiri dari 655 rumah sakit pemerintah dan sisanya rumah sakit milik swasta. Dilihat dari lokasi geografisnya, sekitar 50% rumah sakit di Indonesia berlokasi dipulau Jawa dengan konsentrasi tertinggi terdapat dipulau Jawa Tengah, Jawa Timur, Jawa Barat dan DKI Jakarta (Direktori Persi 2009).
